How To Loosen Up The Demands You Put On Yourself & Still Succeed

Loosen Your Demands

The demands we put on ourselves can be constructive and destructive all at the same time. When our demands start to stress us out, become unreasonable and steal our joy of the present moment, then it's time to step back and reevaluate.

Your life doesn't need to be chaotic and taxing. If it is, you have to believe you have the power to change it. Practicing mindfulness and taming your thoughts is one way to see there's more to life than lists, demands and obligations. Learn how to loosen the demands you put on yourself and still succeed, reach your goals and feel good about yourself.

Define What Success Means To You

The American definition of success is money, wealth, family, kids, large houses, fancy parties and lavish lifestyles. Be honest with yourself. Is that really what you're striving for and think will make you happy? It may, but you'll never be happy no matter how much stuff you have if your mindset, self-esteem and attitude aren't right.

Success has many more meanings than what we consider the "American Dream." Success can be spending more time with your family, starting your own business, learning how to cook, helping those in need or having fun with your hobbies. There isn't one definition of success. Those who think there is are most likely the ones who are the most unhappy. The more we strive for more stuff and things, the more emptiness that's brought into our lives. Love, conversation, living with passion and helping those in need are the type of things that give back.

Proactively Manage Stress & Demands

Stress will run your life if you don't come to an awareness and make an active effort to manage, control and reduce it. The more stressed we are the less we're able to live in the present moment and the quicker life goes by. We wake up weeks, months or years later not knowing where all the time went. When you mange your stress you're able to live in the moment, tap into your creativity and live your life through experiences, instead of demands.

Let Loose Once In A While

Smiling, laughter and relaxation are all beneficial ways to let your guard down and enjoy life. Yes, there are serious moments in life, but that doesn't meant you don't deserve to let your hair down once in a while and be silly. Adults have a tendency to become strict and rigid in their habits and rules, and forget that funny animals, comedy shows, a child's laughter and old memories instantly paint a smile on your face and make your belly hurt from laughing. These are all things that aren't hard to find, but take awareness and attention to appreciate.

Challenge A Perfectionist Mindset

Ask yourself, what's your motivation for the demands you put on yourself. Are you trying to impress someone or collect more things? Or are you doing it for you because it's good for your health and well-being? Sadly, a lot of the times it's for other reasons than what would be best for our own health and happiness. Challenge your all or nothing thinking and stop comparing yourself to other people. It doesn't need to be perfect. It only needs to be what makes you feel alive and keeps you happy and healthy.

Do Something Different

The more demanding you are on yourself the more closed off you become to new experiences, people and opportunities. You become so focused on your goals and demands that you start to block out the world around you. You end up living in your own perception funnel. Branch out, take risks or take up a new hobby. Listen to a new type of music or travel somewhere out of your comfort zone. These are the type of activities that'll force you to grow, learn and break out of your shell.

Conclusion

Be mindful of the demands you're putting on yourself each day. Take note of what this may be doing to your health. Life isn't about being the best or having the most. It's a journey that's filled with hope, fun, experiences, lessons and opportunity, which can only be seen with a still mind.

This is a really insightful post and something that I need to pay attention to as like most people, I’m hardest on myself!

Long ago, pushing yourself to the rim was the going mantra. After years of performing at that rate, many people were simply overworked, stressed, and not as successful as they envisioned. Mindful, intentional actions helps to create a clearer vision and workable path.

Great tips! When I started my blog, I think I put too many demands and stress on myself. These days I have taken a more relaxed approach. I remind myself to have fun with it, stay in the present moment, and good things will come.

Stress is the number one health issue for many people and they don’t even realize it. At least once a day do something just for you. Can be as simple a cup of tea sitting on the porch. Do something for you to relax and let go.

These are great and I constantly need to remind myself of these because I put a lot of stress on myself. Proactively manage stress is a really good one.
